A structure spanning the English Channel wouldn’t come close to Earth’s 10 lengthiest bridges. Many have floated the idea of a bridge between England and mainland Europe.
RANK 1 : The Danyang-Kunshan Grand Bridge, China 164km The bridge is located on the rail line between Shanghai and Nanjing in Jiangsu province. It is in the Yangtze River Delta where the geography is characterised by lowland rice paddies, canals, rivers, and lakes. The bridge runs roughly parallel to the Yangtze River, about 8 to 80 km (5 to 50 mi) south of the river. It passes through the northern edges of population centers (from west to east) beginning in Danyang, Changzhou, Wuxi, Suzhou, and ending in Kunshan. Construction was completed in 2010.
RANK 2 : Changhua–Kaohsiung Viaduct, Taiwan 157km is the world’s second longest bridge and serves as part of the Taiwan High Speed Rail network. Reaching 157.3 km (97.8 miles) in length, the bridge runs from Zouying in Kao-hsiung to Baguashan in Chang-hua county. The bridge and train line were built to minimize earthquake damage, as the area is prone to seismic activity.
RANK 3 : Cangde Grand Bridge, China 116km is the world's fourth longest bridge.Finished in 2010, the bridge is a part of the Beijing–Shanghai High-Speed Railway and is the third longest bridge on the railway. The bridge has been designed with a view to withstanding earthquakes. The total length of the Cangde super-large bridge is 105.81 km (65.75 mi) and it has a total of 3092 piers.
RANK 4 : Tianjin Grand Bridge, China 113km Tianjin Grand Bridge (Langfang–Qingxian viaduct) is a railway viaduct bridge that runs between Langfang and Qingxian, part of the Beijing–Shanghai High-Speed Railway. It is one of the longest bridges in the world with a total length of about 113.7 kilometers (70.6 mi). It was completed in 2010 and opened in 2011.
RANK 5 : Weinan Weihe Grand Bridge, China 79km is a part of the Zhengzhou–Xi'an High-Speed Railway which connects Zhengzhou and Xi'an, in China. The 79.732-kilometer (49.543 mi)-long bridge crosses the Wei River twice, as well as many other rivers, such as the Ling river, Luofu river, Xi river, Shi Di river and many more, highways and railways.Upon its completion, it was the longest bridge in the world, but surpassed by two new bridges on Beijing–Shanghai High-Speed Railway that completed in 2010.
RANK 6 : Bang Na Expressway, Thailand 54km The Bang Na Expressway (full name: Bang Na - Bang Phli - Bang Pakong Expressway), officially Burapha Withi Expressway is a 55-kilometer-long (34 mi) six-lane elevated highway in Thailand. It is a toll road and runs above National Highway route 34, (Bang Na–Trat Highway) owned by the Expressway Authority of Thailand (EXAT). The bridge was the achievement of Sukavich Rangsitpol deputy prime minister of Chuan Leekpai Cabinet (1992-1995). The Bang Na Expressway was designed by the late Louis Berger.
RANK 7 : Beijing Grand Bridge, China 48km The bridge runs roughly parallel to the Yangtze River, about 8 to 80 km (5 to 50 mi) south of the river. It passes through the northern edges of population centers (from west to east) beginning in Danyang, Changzhou, Wuxi, Suzhou, and ending in Kunshan. There is a 9-kilometre long (5.6 mi) section over open water across Yangcheng Lake in Suzhou. Construction was completed in 2010.
RANK 8: Lake Pontchartrain Causeway, USA 38km The longer of the two bridges is 23.83 miles (38.35 km) long. The southern terminus of the causeway is in Metairie, Louisiana, a south shore suburb of New Orleans. The northern terminus is in Mandeville, Louisiana, a north shore suburb of New Orleans. Since 1969, it was listed by Guinness World Records as the longest continuous bridge over water in the world in 2011.
RANK 9 : Wuhan Metro Bridge, China 37km is a bridge across the Yangtze River in Wuhan, Hubei province, China. It is located northeast (downstream) of the historic central area of the city's Hankou District and is the northern crossing for the Inner Ring Road. It is a cable-stayed bridge built of pre-stressed concrete, has a central span of 400 metres (1,300 ft).It is 4.678 kilometres (2.907 mi) in length.
RANK 10 : Manchac Swamp Bridge, USA 36km With a total length of 22.80 miles (36.69 km),it is one of the longest bridges in the world over water and is the longest bridge on the Interstate Highway System. Some claim it is the longest toll-free road bridge in the world. The bridge carries Interstate 55 and U.S. Route 51 over the Manchac Swamp in Louisiana and represents a third of the highway's approximately 66 miles (106 km) in Louisiana. Opening in 1979.
