The FIFA Men's World Ranking is a ranking system for men's national teams in association football, first introduced in December 1992.[1]
The men's teams of the member nations of FIFA, football's world governing body, are ranked based on their game results with the most successful teams being ranked the highest. As of April 2026, the rankings were led by France. Eight teams (Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Spain) have held the top position, of which Brazil have spent the longest time ranked first.
Who are favourites to win the 2026 World Cup?
Rank 1 : Spain seeking second World Cup Lamine Yamal was the breakout star of the Euros and has since gone on to establish himself as one of the most exhilarating players to watch in world football.
Rank 2 : Argentina eyeing back-to-back titles While they may not be everybody’s favourites, it would be foolish to write off South America’s best nation.
Rank 3 : France have been strong contenders for the FIFA World Cup for the last few tournaments, and 2026 will be no different.
Rank 4 : Can England end 60 years of hurt under Thomas Tuchel? With Harry Kane leading the line, the Three Lions will always have a chance of World Cup success, but Tuchel still has several selection dilemmas to solve ahead of the summer.
Rank 5 : Since lifting the World Cup for a record fifth time in 2002, Brazil have been the major underperformers, failing to make it past the quarter-finals since.
Rank 6 : Portugal qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup by winning UEFA Group F, which granted them a direct berth as one of Europe's group winners. The team sealed first place following a dominant 9-1 victory over Armenia in their final match.
Rank 7 : The Netherlands might be the best national team to have never won the World Cup.
Rank 8 : Morocco secured qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup by winning Group E of the CAF qualifying competition, finishing with a perfect record.
Rank 9 : Belgium has been one of Europe’s most consistent national teams over the past decade, qualifying for every major tournament since 2014 and finishing third at the 2018 World Cup
Rank 10 : Germany, who lost their opening qualifier but won the next five on the spin to book their place.
Rank 11 : Croatia are heading back to the FIFA World Cup™ for the seventh time in their history and a fourth edition in succession.
Rank 12 : Senegal qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup by finishing as winners of CAF Group B after a 4-0 victory over Mauritania secured top-spot finish.
Rank 13 : The 2006 World Cup Final Italy team had achieved the ultimate glory, overcoming a formidable French team in a game that will forever be etched in football history.
Rank 14 : Uruguay's World Cup history is legendary, marked by hosting and winning the inaugural 1930 FIFA World Cup.
Rank 15 : Colombia qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup by finishing inside the top six of the CONMEBOL standings, which guaranteed a direct place under the expanded format.
Rank 16 : Japan became the first non-host team to book its spot for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after finishing at the top.
Rank 17 : The USA are getting stronger as the World Cup approaches and that perhaps makes the co-hosts better value to lift the World Cup trophy.
Rank 18 : Mexico grouped with South Korea, South Africa and playoff winner in favorable draw.
Rank 19 : Switzerland are low-key qualification masters. They've not missed a World Cup since 2002 and can nearly always be relied upon to reach the last 16.
The next World Cup will take place from Thursday, June 11 to Sunday, July 19, 2026. The tournament will be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, featuring 48 teams and 104 matches over 39 days.
